Prop 1

Housing Bond

What it is

Proposition 1 promises to help address the California housing crisis by funding affordable housing. If passed, 40,000 multifamily rental units would be built and 40,000 California residents would receive help to buy a home. Funding for the projects would come from the state selling $11.25 billion in bonds, $1.25 billion of which would go towards veteran housing.

What Your Vote Means

Voting YES

The state could borrow $11.25 billion to support veterans and affordable housing.

Voting NO

The state could not borrow $11.25 billion to support veterans and affordable housing.

Arguments

Supporters say

Proposition 1 would cut red tape to allow more affordable housing to be built. The California Democratic Party and Governor Gavin Newsom support the measure.

More arguments here.

Opponents say

Proposition 1 does not do anything to address a key concern: why it’s so expensive to build in California in the first place. Opponents include some state Republican lawmakers.

Fiscal Impact

Increased state cost of $500 million to $600 million annually for about 25 years to repay the housing bond.
