Local Tax Threshold

What it is

Proposition 43 would raise the percentage of votes needed to pass a special tax from a simple majority vote to a two-thirds majority vote. Beginning January 1, 2027, any new, increased or extended local special tax would require a two-thirds vote.

Supporters say

Proposition 43 would make it more difficult to tax residents in a state that already has high taxes. California Taxpayers Association, Family Business Association of California and California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce are among the groups that support the measure.

Proposition 43 would make it harder for cities and counties to raise money for local issues that may not necessarily be issues statewide. California Professional Firefighters, California Federation of Teachers and Nurse Alliance of SEIU California are among the groups that oppose the measure.
